FACTS
In 2014, plaintiff Wanda Jimenez, a detention-services officer, worked at the Los Angeles County Probation Department. She claimed that she was sexually harassed by her supervisor, Marcus Harris. Jimenez sued Harris and her employer, Los Angeles County. Jimenez alleged that Harris’ actions constituted sexual harassment and that the county was vicariously liable for Harris’ actions. Jimenez claimed that Harris touched her inappropriately, made sexually explicit comments and routinely commented on her body. She also claimed that she complained about Harris’ actions to her supervisors, but that nothing was done to stop the harassment. Jimenez claimed that, instead, she was retaliated against for making the complaints. Defense counsel disputed all of Jimenez’ allegations., Jimenez had worked for the department since 2007. She claimed that she suffered emotional distress as a result of the alleged harassment. She also claimed that she suffered a loss of income as a result of the alleged retaliation. Jimenez sought recovery for her loss of income and her emotional pain and suffering. According to defense counsel, during closing arguments, plaintiff’s counsel asked the jury to award Jimenez $7.5 million in total damages.
