FACTS
In 2013, plaintiff Lili Hadsell, a police chief in her 50s, was terminated form her position with the city of Baldwin Park. Hadsell claimed that, prior to her termination, she was subjected to five years of gender harassment, as subordinates constantly undermined her and questioned her decisions. She made complaints to her supervisor but was ultimately fired. Hadsell sued her employer, Baldwin Park; Mayor Manuel Lozano; Mayor Pro-Tem Ricardo Pacheco; and City Council members Cruz Baca, Susan Rubio and Monica Garcia. Hadsell alleged that the defendants’ actions constituted gender discrimination, gender harassment and retaliation. The individual defendants were ultimately dismissed from the case, and the matter continued against the city only. Defense counsel contended that Hadsell had problems working with members of the department and that two of the three council members who voted to remove Hadsell were women., Hadsell was promoted to police chief in 2008. She claimed she endured harassment in the position from when she started until she was terminated in 2013. Hadsell claimed that as a result of the events, she suffers from emotional distress. The plaintiff’s expert psychiatrist indicated that Hadsell suffered from major depressive disorder, but that Hadsell is in partial remission. Hadsell sought recovery of lost earnings, and damages for her past and future emotional pain and suffering.
