Between 2009 and 2014, the plaintiffs, which consisted of nine female students, ages 8 to 11 years old, were allegedly molested by Ronnie Roman, 47, while he was a coach at Cahuenga Elementary School, in Los Angeles. Roman was eventually arrested and charged with molesting the girls. During a criminal trial, it was alleged that at least six of the assaults occurred on the school’s campus and that at least one of the assaults took place in the victim’s home. The jury ultimately found him guilty of molesting seven of the girls while he was employed by the Los Angeles Unified School District. As a result, Roman is serving a sentence of 105 years to life. The nine minor female students, through their respective guardians ad litem, filed six separate lawsuits against the operator of the schools that employed Roman, the Los Angeles Unified School District. The students alleged that the school district was negligent in the supervision and retention of Roman, resulting in the sexual assaults. The six lawsuits were ultimately consolidated. Three other related lawsuits were also filed in Los Angeles County Superior Court, but those matters were not consolidated with that other actions. Plaintiffs’ counsel contended that the first reported case of sexual abuse by Roman was committed in Vine Elementary School, in Los Angeles, in 2002. Counsel contended that instead of firing Roman or notifying the police, the school district ignored the reports of sexual abuses committed by Roman and, instead, transferred him to Cahuenga Elementary School, where Roman received a promotion and continued to sexually molest little girls. Plaintiffs’ counsel asserted that Roman had access to children at multiple schools through his position with the school district and Cahuenga Elementary School’s "Beyond the Bell" afterschool program, where he worked as a mentor, coach and supervisor. While at Cahuenga Elementary School, children reported misconduct that included Roman playing a game called "Four Corners," which involved blindfolding the students and spinning them until they felt dizzy, as well as accused Roman of pressing his penis into the backs and buttocks of children. Defense counsel asserted that the school district was not negligent in the hiring, retention or supervision of Roman., The nine minor girls each claimed that they were sexually assaulted by Roman. They alleged that as a result, they suffered from emotional distress, including anxiety and depression.
