FACTS
On Dec. 31, 2017, plaintiff Lorena Pedraza visited the emergency room at Zuckerberg San Francisco General Hospital and Trauma Center, in San Francisco. She was suffering an allergic reaction. She was treated with epinephrine. However, Pedraza claimed that she was given an overdose of epinephrine intravenously, resulting in chest pain, a heat attack and an arrhythmia. Pedraza sued the operator of the hospital, the city and county of San Francisco, alleging that the hospital’s staff was negligent in her treatment and that their negligence constituted medical malpractice. Pedraza’s counsel contended that the hospital’s nurse that administered the dose failed to monitor Pedraza’s dose and negligently administered the epinephrine. Defense counsel disputed all of Pedraza’s claims., After being given the dose of epinephrine intravenously, Pedraza suffered life-threatening arrhythmia and complained of chest pain. It was determined that she suffered a myocardial infarction. She claimed that as a result, she suffered severe and permanent cardiac damage. Pedraza claimed that as a result of her heart’s condition, she would require additional medical care and incur additional medical expenses. Pedraza sought recovery of past and future medical costs, and damages for past and future pain and suffering.
