FACTS
On April 29, 2015, plaintiff Mirna Molina, 30, a hairstylist, was stopped at a red light on Cordova Street, in Pasadena, when her vehicle was rear-ended by the vehicle behind her after it was rear-ended by a vehicle operated by Gaby Boutros. Molina claimed to lower back. Molina sued Boutros, alleging that Boutros was negligent in the operation of his vehicle. Boutros admitted liability., Molina claimed that she sustained a herniated lumbar disc in her spine as a result of the accident. She presented to an urgent care facility later that day and ultimately received an epidural injection. Molina claimed that she will require three epidural injections, as well as surgical procedures to her spine. During trial, she also claimed that she would eventually require a spinal cord stimulator. Molina sought recovery of $1.3 million, which included the approximate lifetime of the spinal cord stimulator. Defense counsel denied causation and contended that Molina’s were caused by a subsequent accident that occurred 1.5 months after the subject collision. Counsel also disputed the severity of Molina’s injury claim, arguing that Molina’s treatment and outlook was medical build-up, manufactured by plaintiff’s counsel.
