FACTS
In 2018, plaintiff Ysabel Villegas, a police detective, was transferred from the Los Angeles Police Department’s elite robbery-homicide division. Prior to her transfer, Villegas reported allegations about a senior lead officer in the Los Angeles Police Department’s Central Division, Danny Reedy. Villegas claimed that Reedy beat her and threatened to share sexually explicit images that he had secretly taken of her if she tried to end their extramarital relationship. She claimed that she was transferred out of the robbery-homicide division in retaliation for making the complaints. Villegas sued Reedy and Reedy’s employer, the city of Los Angeles. Villegas alleged that Reedy’s actions constituted domestic violence, revenge pornography, and a violation of her civil rights under the Ralph Act. She also alleged that the defendants’ actions constituted retaliation and a creation of a hostile work environment. Villegas claimed that she had a five-year extramarital affair with Reedy and that Reedy eventually became abusive. She claimed that she decided to end the affair in 2017, but that Reedy refused and threatened to release sexually explicit photographs of her if she broke up with him. Villegas alleged that when she still decided to end the affair, Reedy sent the explicit photos to colleagues. Villegas claimed that she reported Reedy, but that senior officers failed to investigate Reedy’s threats and left her unprotected from the abuse. She also claimed that when she returned from stress leave, she was transferred from the robbery-homicide division in retaliation for making the complaints. Defense counsel disputed Villegas’ allegations and the factual bases of her claims., Villegas, who worked for the Los Angeles Police Department for 30 years, claimed that she suffered emotional distress as a result of the alleged events. She claimed that as a result, she went out of work on medical leave due to the stress in 2018 and that while she was on leave, she was transferred from the the elite robbery-homicide division to a lesser position. Villegas sought recovery for her emotional pain and suffering.
