FACTS
In December 2011, plaintiff Rosa Gonzalez, a sheriff’s deputy, was transferred to the East Los Angeles County Sheriff’s Patrol Station, in East Los Angeles. Gonzalez claimed that the station was run by male deputies who were misogynistic and denied female deputies promotional opportunities. She claimed that she was harassed, discriminated against and retaliated against for filing a formal grievance about the way she was treated. Gonzalez sued the police station’s operator, Los Angeles County. She alleged that the county’s actions constituted gender discrimination, sexual harassment, workplace harassment and retaliation in violation of California’s Fair Employment and Housing Act. Gonzalez claimed that the male deputies at the East Los Angeles station referred to her by derogatory, gender-based names. The master field training sergeant assigned Gonzalez to act as a mentor to the deputies at the location on July 23, 2014. Eight days later, she was summoned to a meeting by two male sergeants. According to Gonzalez, the sergeants accused her of hazing a deputy and of improperly handling two emergency calls, and then demanded that she resign from her mentor position. Gonzalez denied the sergeants’ claims, but she was removed from her position the following day. Gonzalez claimed that she reported the two sergeants via a formal grievance on Aug. 4, 2014. In her grievance, Gonzalez alleged that she was subjected to discrimination and disparate treatment due to her gender. She claimed that, after she filed the grievance, she was ostracized and was not provided backup when she requested it. She also claimed that a male sergeant intentionally gave her a low score on a sergeant’s promotional exam to prevent her promotion., Gonzalez has been a deputy sheriff with the Los Angeles Police Department since February 1999. She claimed that she suffered emotional distress as a result of discrimination and harassment. She sought recovery of lost wages and damages for emotional pain and suffering.
