FACTS
In January 2010, the claimants, men and women beyond the age of 40, employees of Jet Propulsion Laboratory, a federally funded research and development center and NASA field center in La Cañada Flintridge, began to lose their jobs. They claimed that between January 2010 and April 2020, Jet Propulsion Laboratory laid off employees beyond the age of 40 in favor of keeping younger employees. They also claimed that, during that same time, older employees were passed over for rehire in favor of less qualified, younger employees. The EEOC, acting in the claimants’ behalf, sued Jet Propulsion Laboratory, alleging that the defendant’s actions constituted violations of the Age Discrimination in Employment Act of 1967. Jet Propulsion Laboratory’s counsel denied Jet Propulsion Laboratory had any discriminatory employee termination or retention policies., The claimants sought recovery of lost earnings and benefits as a result of their respective terminations.
