FACTS
In March 2014, the plaintiff, 16, a female high school student at Paso Robles High School, began a sexual relationship with her high school agriculture teacher, Jeremy Monn. Prior to teaching at Paso Robles, Monn worked at Don Pedro High School, in Tuolumne County. Multiple representatives of his employer, Big Oak Flat-Groveland Unified School District, provided glowing letters of recommendation for Monn. As a result, Monn was able to secure a teaching position at Paso Robles. However, the Paso Robles High School student claimed that there were numerous complaints about Monn while he worked at Don Pedro High School, but that Big Oak Flat-Groveland Unified School District still provided favorable recommendations, which allowed Monn to obtain employment with the Paso Robles Joint Unified School District. The student also claimed that once working at Paso Robles High School, Monn was able to manipulate her, resulting in sexual abuse. Monn was ultimately arrested and criminally charged in June 2014. The 16-year-old student sued Monn; Big Oak Flat-Groveland Unified School District; a superintendent for Big Oak, Dave Urquhart; Paso Robles Joint Unified School District. Plaintiff’s counsel contended that when Monn was employed by Big Oak Flat-Groveland Unified School District, numerous complaints arose regarding Monn’s serious misconduct toward female students, including allegations of having sexual relations with students. However, counsel asserted that despite Big Oak receiving numerous complaints about Monn, Urquhart and multiple other representatives of the school district provided glowing, but false, letters of recommendation for Monn. Counsel also asserted that Big Oak knowingly provided the false letters of recommendations for Monn so that it could rid itself of a problematic teacher. Plaintiff’s counsel contended that as a result, Monn was able to secure a teaching position at Paso Robles High School, where he ultimately had access to the plaintiff and others. Plaintiff’s counsel contended that once Monn was working at Paso Robles High School, the Paso Robles Joint Unified School District negligently supervised and monitored Monn and its students, resulting in Monn sexually abusing the plaintiff. Thus, counsel asserted that throughout the 2013/2014 school year, Monn groomed and conditioned the 16-year-old plaintiff, culminating in him taking advantage of her sexually. Big Oak Flat-Groveland Unified School District, Urquhart, and Paso Robles Joint Unified School District all claimed to have no prior knowledge of Monn’s misconduct., The 16-year-old student at Paso Robles High School claimed that she was sexually abused by Monn, resulting in severe emotional distress. She claimed that the extent of her emotional distress was discovered by attending counseling and therapy sessions, which she plans on continuing to attend to help with her depression, anxiety, trust issues, and other symptoms related to the abuse. While she was able to graduate from high school, the plaintiff was not pursuing higher education.
